We were honored to feature Lakisha Corbett for our Women Crush Wednesday series on The Red Bra Project YouTube Channel. Lakisha shared with us her authentic story about making big decisions, cross country moves and truly following your dreams by taking action, trusting the process and practicing gratitude daily.
Lakisha’s story begins in Harlem, NY where she was employed at a storage company, a job she dropped out of school to keep. In November of 2016, she was fired from her position and she began to realize there is no such thing as job security. This is where her blog was born Our Lips Are Moving. The name, cleverly inspired by Meghan Trainor was a place she began to write about her experience of being let go. Lakisha quickly realized that her words truly started to resonate with those around her dealing with similar situations, so she kept writing.
Having started back in the 9 – 5 world, Lakisha took a position at another storage company, but continued to write. Through being fired, writing about her experience and connecting with so many other women through sharing her own story she discovered what truly lit her up from the inside out – helping women on a more personal level. She made a huge life decision and just knew she was made for more. Her first step was to hire a coach to help guide her along the way. Looking back, she was so, so happy she did as her own coach was extremely instrumental in her growth. Lakisha knew she wanted to do the same for other women.
Leaving her 9 – 5 position, this time on her terms was another pivotal point in her journey, she told us, ” When I put in my two weeks notice at my day job, my manager told me I would be back in a few months, begging for my job back (just like everyone else). It struck a cord with me and I made a vow to myself to hustle, never go back there.” Lakisha had a dream, proclaimed the goals publicly and of course always puts them in writing and kept moving forward with an action plan to get there.
The next huge decision she made was to go where the sunshine was. If she could work from anywhere, she wanted plenty of rays to warm her days! From NYC to LA – Lakisha chose her destination. Mind you, she had NEVER left her home state before! Nothing was going to stop her. She literally moved cross country, knowing only two people in the area, a dream, goal, plan and with no drivers license! When we asked her what was running through her mind on that long flight over she said, “Hopped off the plane in LAX with a dream and a cardigan,” playing over & over in her mind was what helped to put her at ease. She knew only she could save herself, no one else and there was no looking back. This was definitely one of her red bra moments!
As a mindset coach (aka fairy godmother to many), Lakisha empowers women in so many ways and one of those is her natural ability to shine a light on what makes them phenomenal. “As humans, we tend to forget, I help them to see what I see when I look at them,” she said.” (We completely agree with this statement, Lakisha!)
We asked Lakisha just HOW she powers through fear, “I remind myself what is at stake – my dreams are worth so much more to me than my desire to stay the same. So, I keep moving forwards, even if it’s just one step at a time!”
Lakisha’s energy is infectious and simply radiates – catch the replay right here to see for yourself! Such an inspiration to so many struggling with a 9 – 5 who feel they are made for more. You can find Lakisha @ourlipsaremoving on IG for daily inspo.
